LOL! You're probably right. But actually, doing this one takes less than 15 minutes.

The top five, with their scores:

The Corporation    46.9
Napoleon Dynamite  25.2
De-Lovely          24.3
Control Room       22.5
Spider-Man 2       18.3

I've come up with a way to identify the movies that have great "word of mouth", which is different than great total box office.  The movie has to have been out for at least 3 weeks, and you get the score by multiplying the number of weeks out by the dollars per screen (in K dollars).   In other words, still filling the theaters after being out for awhile, which is usually due to great word-of-mouth.

This tends to identify "small" films which friends are recommending to friends, but blockbusters can make it onto the list too.

I'll try to put this list up every Friday, based on on current info from rottentomatoes.com, my favorite movie review site.

than the two currently accepeted methods; 1)what the critics say, and 2)what the box office says. My brother and I have often mused that the list of top films would be a little different if people with a sense for statistics and mathematics were doing the compiling. For example, if you take into account factors such as inflation, and compare to the population at the time the film was released, Gone With the Wind would probably be by far the highest grossing film of all time. If we had the time and resources, we would compile such a list. Your method is probably as good a method as any to account for what you call the word of mouth factor. I've often wondered how much of the first two weeks of box office are due solely to hypola, but that's where the biggest bucks and the most attention are gained. By the way, have you ever read the book, "50 Worst Films of All Time"? As I recall, the absolute bottom was "The Conquerer", which also was one of the most expensive, adjusting for inflation. John Wayne does not make a good Genghis Khan!

my belief that I NEVER want to work for a corporation. I've avoided it thus far. Yes, I'm fully aware that I'll most likely always be poor. That's ok with me:-) It was a very interesting film.
