Can't trust anyone with fire because it's only a matter of timeconfused_smile

before someone is careless.  It only takes one second and one stupid action/person to burn it all down.  I know this from experience.  I burnt my porch down six months ago from a sage wand that hadn't been put out completely.  Thought it was safe in that glass cigar bowl, but nope. It reignited and the wind was just right (or wrong). I Was on my way home with my son and saw all these fire trucks racing by.  I just had this feeling and sure enough, there were firetrucks in front of my house.  The fire had almost spread to the house where my two dogs were locked inside.  Only one second and one stupid action/person.

I go camping all the time and sometimes for over a month at a time.  We don't light fires anymore.  We've learned to function without it.  Sometimes it's nice to not have any light so that you can see all the stars.  I have such cursed luck with flashlights so the best bet for me has been this ridiculous wind up lantern with radio.  I just bought a Surefire flashlight two months ago.  Cost me $70 for a dinky one and now I can't find the damn thing.  Somebody needs to put "campfire in a can" air freshener so that you have the smell of a campfire and maybe one of those battery operated pots that have air blowing through fabric (with the red dancing lights).  It looks like fire especially after a couple of beers.  Sure is better than burning down the forest.

I can't stand being around smokers in the first place.  Don't get me started with the ones throwing their ashes out the window!  Grrrrrr!!!!

Every year good citizens of Flagstaff have to find their houses and lives put at risk because the Forest Service refuses to take appropriate actions to protect the forest. Honestly, the situation is crazy. Last year the head of the district wrote an op ed piece in the local paper defending people's constitutional right to grill hotdogs and marshmallows over an open fire. It's a nice thought but I know people who lost their house to flooding (no insurance purchased could help because of a 30 day wait period - floods hit 24 days after the fire) after the North East side of the mountain burned 4 years ago. The fire was caused by a legal fire that had not been extinguished improperly but everyone who keeps their eye on the forest health here was calling for a fire ban all that summer.
My sources say this Slide fire was likely caused by a campground fire in Oak Creek which once again was legal because the fire restrictions have not gone far enough in regards to the drought conditions this year. It's even more frustrating to find the Sierra Club continues to sue the FS over thinning the forest and has kept thinning projects from proceeding. The Sierra Club policies have kept the Forest from being thinned for 20 years, much of the disagreement is over tree trunk diameter, FS wants 36in. and under to be culled, SC wants 30in and under. In the meantime, we are going to lose the entire forest to catastrophic fire which is anything but natural. A natural Ponderosa Forest grows it's trees 50 meters apart so that when one tree burns due to lightening, the rest are secure. Our forest has responded to historic logging by growing in a thicket and is therefore prone to unnatural loss.
Sorry, more than most of you wanted to know, I'm sure.

was watching the news here in the Bay area and lo and behold.   My beloved Oak Creek Canyon is now on fire due to some nimrod humans..

Prayers to all of those families, friends that we all may know in that region...

May the culprits be fully prosecuted..    not just in this fire, but in all of the fires all over...

If you smoke, please don't throw your butts out the window.  If you camp, make sure you fire is out..

Think it's going to be a summer of lots of fires here.  Still see the a-holes throwing butts out of their cars.  At least they got some cooler weather up in Sedona.

Little bit of hysteria in Flagstaff yesterday. Today things are settling down. Hopefully, we can get this fire under control. Kinda freaks me out that the fire is only 20-30 miles from my house and my business

isn't it also due to the tree huggers, who damn near stopped the logging process in the last 25 years, which allowed the pine beetle to take over and kill hundreds of pine in the Oak Creek Canyon area?

For at least the last ten to 12 years I've watched more and more trees die and create that huge tinder box...

OK.  Some blame goes to tree huggers (I like trees and have hugged a few).  They make oxygen that gets stolen by some real idiots in AZ Legislature, Cities, and Counties.

Beetles arise from the problem of extended drought caused by subtle shifts in the CLIMATE.  Extended drought, the trees do not produce enough sap, and that sticky pine resin is one of the tools the trees use to fight off pests like pine beetles.   Rising temperatures over time, winters become less severe, and the bugs are able to survive and thrive.

Sick trees are unable to fight off infestations, and turn into giant resin filled match sticks that explode when fire gets into the crowns of the trees.

There's no one single thing you can point to and say "A-HA!".  It's a great interconnected web, and you could even say that the kill off of wolves and big cats in the wild causes this as well.  More predators, mean less plant eating deer, moose, etc. that damage trees, allowing bugs to get in, causing sick trees, etc.

it is very sad though....

for a myriad of reasons....

I love trees, I live in the redwoods....

I'm bringing an incredibly special guest up to Oak Creek/Junipine in July when she visits.  I hate to think about the view being blackened and scarred, and the damage done.

Find 'em, Hang 'em High.

Yes, I am the classic tree hugger and yes, what i was trying to get across is the Sierra Club representing the tree huggers has stopped logging which has also stopped thinning which we need desperately to save the forest. The problem is when they call in the loggers they clear cut to maximize profits and we lose the forest. It's complex but the political fight over this shit will result in losing our forest to fire or to clearcut.
FS is announcing that campfires will be allowed in campgrounds throughout the forest over this holiday weekend. I just can't believe they won't put stricter requirements on it. We are screwed.
Dave does have it right, the beetle population explosion is a result of warmer climate, not of the logging policy.

that this fire was intently set!!! If and when this nimrod is caught he needs to be drawn and quartered.

what's so awful is not only were these set by nimrods, so were the fires down in Southern Cali.  I have been diligent about keeping my redwood droppings (being north of San Francisco) swept up and taken to the refuse area for outdoor stuff....

I am astounded the state is going to allow the campgrounds to be open.    I don't know...

Again, prayers are the best...

Hope you're well Mr. WLMink...  :)

Gee, Maybe all humans should be confined too urban areas. The earth will out live us all. Get over your knee jerk reactions! It sucks but there are many areas in this state that have burned and are beautiful once again. How many forests got wiped out during the ice age? And yet we still have forests.

If they where set intentionally without imminent need then yes they should be prosecuted.

When the time comes and they ask for volunteers to help replant these areas will those of you pissing and moaning volunteer your time to help? Highly unlikely.
