I will be visiting San Francisco in a few weeks for a company meeting staying in the Union Square area.  My ATF will be in town and I'd like to take her to dinner somewhere nice.  My objective is to be away from Union Square where I won't run into some of the hundreds of people from my company.  Is there a nice place somewhere that tourists don't go to?  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Foreign Cinema! A local favorite!

I had an amazing experience at Boboquivari's in the Marina District a few months ago.  The service was wonderful, the food amazing (I had the surf & turf) and it had a private club vibe that made it feel exclusive rather than touristy.  It's a la carte and pricey but if you're visiting SF, you really should splurge and treat yourself

If you want Old-time classic steak that's tucked out of the way but amazingly good with classic 40's feel? Try Alfred's on Merchant. They're by the Hilton in the Financial District, so you can park there and walk around the block.

I'm a big fan of Burma Superstar on Clement St. in the Inner Richmond district. The only problem is they don't take reservations so you will have to wait for a table, but there are plenty of places nearby to pass the time (my personal favorite is Green Apple Books, one of the best independent bookstores in the city). There are actually a lot of other good restaurants in that area, too... worth checking out.

+1 on Burma Superstar (and Green Apple Books).  parking can be tricky in that area of town, but where isn't parking tricky in SF.

If you're after a great steak try Harris on Van Ness. Someone mentioned Bobo's, to each his own, but I had a TERRIBLE meal there the one and only time I went a couple months ago. Harris is meant to be a classy, upscale old-time steak joint, and I think they do pretty well on the atmosphere. The food is also outstanding, but note there are some tourists (mostly Asian, so it must be in some Asian language tourist guides).
