In my case, I've been extremely careful of what I do on my computer. I have different accounts for the family members who MAY use my computer when I am not home. I solved a lot of that issue of computer sharing by purchasing a laptop for both of my daughters and a nice computer for the S.O..
Outside of that...
You need to listen carefully of that person you think may be a hobbyist and many times it's hard to pick up different nuances of how their thought process might be different from the past.

Of course you can snoop into their affairs and try to steal their cell phone and look up the numbers on it, but do you really want to go there?
