As a matter of fact, player-for-player you do win many comparisons, but they are mostly very slight wins; Babe Ruth vs. Ted Williams - greatest hitter ever vs 2nd greatest hitter ever is basically a wash.
Same is true for DiMaggio vs Speaker, Gehrig vs Foxx, Cano vs Doerr. The only clear wins you have are Mantle vs Yastrzemski and Rivera vs Papelbon. On the other hand, the Red Sox overall pitching staff and bench are clear winners.

Billy Williams is a fine choice, but Lou Brock only had one good season in a Cubs uniform. Dawson probably had his best years a a Cub, even though he spent a lot more time in Montreal, and bouncing around at the end. Hack Wilson and Kiki Cuyler are better outfield choices. And while Randy Hundley was a decent catcher, Gabby Hartnett is considered one of the best ever, he certainly gets the nod over Hundley.

Your pitching staff has some holes, I assume you meant Greg Maddix, not Gary, but you forgot Fergie Jenkins who won 20 like six times in a row for the Cubbies. and claiming Dennis Eckersley? He had a decent starting career for the Indians and Red Sox pre-rehab, and an incredible career as a closer for the Athletics afterwards. In the middle, for the Cubbies, he had 3 very mediocre seasons. How about Mordecai (3 finger) Brown, Charlie Root, Rick Sutcliffe, or Rick Reuschel?

some say the 1929-1931 Athletics were the best teams ever - Al Simmons, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Left Grove, Rube Wahlberg, Bing Miller and Max Bishop to name a few. Add in Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire, Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, and Eddie Collins from the old days, and you have a pretty good start.
