by coming out for Gay marriage. Romney can be wishy washy all day, people sort of expect that from politicians, but screw with their fundamental beliefs, and your off to the speaking tour circuit earlier than you planned.

He already had the gay vote, what he needed was the undecided vote. He lost that when he came out for Gay Marriage.

He is toast.

Obama did this because his base has lost enthusiasm and a lot of 2008 Obama supporters may stay away from the polls this year.  Stirring up the culture war is  good way to reignite their enthusiasm.

...if the GOP runs on a culture war, they lose, and lose big. The guy may be a shitty President, but when it comes to running for political office, the guy is playing chess while the GOP is playing checkers.

His record with the economy and jobs is abysmal.  His healthcare debacle is in the hands of the Supreme Court.

He is merely deflecting all attention that stemmed from his failures and moving it to other issues where he can't lose.

Yep, the guy has been campaigning since Jan. 21, 2009 for this election.  No wonder he knows what he is doing when it comes to running for office.

From what I read, Joe Bidens comments last week forced his hand. I think he would have eventually come out in support of it, but not in an election year given his choice.

on a plank at its convention.

President Obama calls the shots at this time for the Party.  As well he should.  He is the President and really the only positive thing the Party has going for it these days.

If gay marriage was going to be a key component of the platform in Charlotte, it was going to be because Obama wanted it.

Simple as that.

You mean the war against abortion?  A subject which affects men and children too.

You mean the nonsense over contraception from a few months ago?

Willy, you can point to any topic and say it started 50 years ago.  Dems have been trying to paint Republicans as anti-woman forever.

The thing is, culture wars -- as you call them -- are not just part of the political world.  Women have been mistreated and disrespected for centuries.  And in the world of politics, they have been disrespected even more, and especially by men at the very top of the U.S. political system.  Men like Presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton who were notorious for their sordid affairs with women.  And Senator John Edwards who is currently on trial for actions taken while he was involved in an extra-marital affair with another woman.

Oh, what do you know, those three men were all Democrats . . . . .  Hmmmm, maybe the Republicans aren't the only ones with a War against Women . . . .

...it was the GOP that re-ignited the culture war. It wasn't just issues like gay marriage, it was the GOP that, starting from 2010, began this war against women.

If the GOP wants to run on a culture war from 50 years ago, I think the Dems would be foolish not to run on it too.

Notbing -- and I mean absolutely nothing -- will take place on the stage at Charlotte this summer that was not approved and/or wanted by President Obama.

Obama has had some pressure put on by a number of state party chairs, including California’s who  want to have a marriage-equality plank in the national platform.  I agree you are right Obama will probably have to approve what happens on stage .
The  NC vote and what Biden said along with the convention being held in Charlotte led to his announcement .Obama would have had a statement  about it before the convention but his hand was forced early by these factors IMO.

I was joking about Clooney but it is also a calculated political move that will shore Obama up even more huge bucks from Clooney's pals at that party tonight and all will be in a gay celebratory mood :D

What is unclear is if the growing number of same-sex marriage backers in the Democratic establishment—including iconic figures like Obama for America co-chair Caroline Kennedy (who is claimed as a supporter by those pushing for the gay-marriage plank), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell—will be able to create the air of inevitability needed to force Obama’s hand and get marriage equality into the Democratic platform.

“Do I think they can get 15 percent of the platform committee to support the issuing of a minority report in favor of marriage equality? Absolutely,” said veteran Democratic consultant Tad Devine, who worked for President Jimmy Carter when Sen. Ted Kennedy challenged him from the left for their party's presidential nomination in 1980.

The Obama campaign, Devine said, “will have to decide, do we want a big public fight over this, or should we just let it happen and work on crafting language that we’re comfortable with?”
