Clearance and Hobbying?

Anybody gone to a job which asked you to get a clearance? Secret, Top Secret, etc.? What has been asked with repect to hobbying? Is my past hobbying a complete bar to such a job?

I have a few friends that have been through it.  They'll first ask you if you've been to any of the websites that tell you how to pass a polygraph. Then depending on the level of clearance you looking to get.  The ask you things that someone could use to blackmmale you. One friend was asked if ever had sex with another man. Another was asked about drug use and being a member of any anti government groups. I was also told that if you don't want to answer a question you can end it. But you prob won't get the clearance or job. I'd say roll the dice and go for it.

If you have already started the process, completed all the required paper work, then the next will be interviews. Be honest, it's not so much you need to confess your sins and indiscretions, but if you are asked, have you ever slept with a prostitute or paid for sex, tell them you have traveled to Vegas toured to the bunny ranch.

In any case, if your job requires you to get cleared, don’t run away, it’s not that big of a deal, just takes a long time to get finished.

Good Luck – Happy Hobbying

Yes, My first time taking a polygraph test, I simply told them beforehand that I had gone overseas once with friends and they had gotten me a hooker and hooked me up with her.

I passed it and every time I take one, I pass it because I always tell the same story beforehand, in voice and in my mind.

There are many places where prostitution is either legal or openly accepted. When I'm in Germany I drink the local beer, and when I'm in Italy I eat the local pizza...who wouldn't want to sample the local delicacies that make travel worthwhile?

No reason not to answer all questions openly and honestly, but then I've never done the "lifestyle-poly" required for 'special' clearences.  They are looking for things that could leave you compromised, but if you've done nothing you wouldn't be ashamed of having come up at dinner with your parents (or with HR and your job) then I'd say press ahead.  (But then my parents were more liberal than most.)

Naked in the streets!  OMG what to do (but enjoy)?

No, your *past* hobbying will not definitely bar you from a job anymore than *past* use of drugs etc.

A secret level clearance will not ask you this question unless it's related to say, an arrest.  For TS level clearance that requires a polygraph, you're best off being honest.  They WILL ask you questions regarding this among other possible criminal activities.  Why?  Because they want to make sure you can't be blackmailed.  They'll ask you about everything from your porn viewing habits to your sexual preferences.  The questions do vary slightly, but expect these kinds of questions will come up.

Some people claim they know how to get around a polygraph.  I'm very skeptical of these people.  I've seen people try to make up a story and lie, and seen them get caught.  I highly recommend you tell the truth and deal with the consequences.  Lying to a polygraph will kick you out of the running for sure.  Past misdeeds they'll look at it and may write it off, depending on the position.  If you're going for something like an engineer on a TS project, they won't care.  If you're going for a law enforcement position, you'll out of luck there.

Especially the part about the engineer/scientist versus the LE position. Since the engineer types usually have a very specific range of what they can look at / be exposed to, they/we don't usually get the hard questions.

This is when I am glad I run my own buisness

Lot of people forget what they said on there last background check..Ex; I never "use drugs", on the follow-up you admit use..That's a no..no, you will loss your clearance for lying.. They are looking for inconsistency like this..

Always be honest even if it's embarrassing(sp). Always act like you are sorry for any wrong doing in your past..

Credit checks  for all clearences..
Local Background/FBI checks
Lifestyle polygraph weed out a lot of people..Just hard to get around. Personal questions you want to stay away from..

You have a process just in case you are denied a clearences(sp).. Need more information please PM me.

in court as evidence - best estimates, if examined scientifically is maybe 60/40 chance of being right versus 50/50 if you flip a coin.  Its used more as a deterrent, as one person noted above, just reherse your story well and remain consistent.  If anything, just say friends got you drunk to celebrate divorce or something and you got a BJ.

for "Govt"security clearences. Lot of people have tried and fail on lifestyle Polys.

failed and not recieved a clearance, and doubtless many liars have gotten through..Its like flipping a coin.

...It always says I'm lying, and...well...I'm always lying.

If everyone in DC who participated in "hobbying" at some point in their life lost their clearance, half the workforce in the various agencies and commands in the DC area would be out of job.  A lot of folks are ex-military, and we all know what we did when we were young and stationed overseas.  Where you will get in trouble on the poly is with the "did you ever betrary the trust of a friend (such as buddy, girlfriend or wife)?  So, if you were "out on the town" while married or serious with someone, you will remember that when asked this question and show deception.  This is good however, because this standard question is designed to see what a lie looks like when you tell one, as polygraphers know everyone has betrayed a friend's trust during their life.
