Creepy -- it's called the uncanny valley. The valley of creepiness exists just at the transition point of the faces becoming lifelike. Farther out (more cartoonish) they can look cute and innocent. But as the similarity to real life increases there is a rather abrupt point at which we have a revulsion. This point is called the uncanny valley.
