Bill Maher said that she appeared 22 times on his Politically Incorrect show and he is going to play a clip from each show until she comes on Real Time with him. The clip about her dabbling in witchcraft was from one of her appearances on Politically Incorrect and Maher played it on his show last Friday night.

Tim Wise on Jeremiah Wright and the Truth

March 18, 2008
Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama and the Unacceptability of Truth Of National Lies and Racial America

By TIM WISE

For most white folks, indignation just doesn't wear well. Once affected or conjured up, it reminds one of a pudgy man, wearing a tie that may well have fit him when he was fifty pounds lighter, but which now cuts off somewhere above his navel and makes him look like an idiot.

Indignation doesn't work for most whites, because having remained sanguine about, silent during, indeed often supportive of so much injustice over the years in this country--the theft of native land and genocide of indigenous persons, and the enslavement of Africans being only two of the best examples--we are just a bit late to get into the game of moral rectitude. And once we enter it, our efforts at righteousness tend to fail the test of sincerity.

But here we are, in 2008, fuming at the words of Pastor Jeremiah Wright, of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago--occasionally Barack Obama's pastor, and the man whom Obama credits with having brought him to Christianity--for merely reminding us of those evils about which we have remained so quiet, so dismissive, so unconcerned. It is not the crime that bothers us, but the remembrance of it, the unwillingness to let it go--these last words being the first ones uttered by most whites it seems whenever anyone, least of all an "angry black man" like Jeremiah Wright, foists upon us the bill of particulars for several centuries of white supremacy.

But our collective indignation, no matter how loudly we announce it, cannot drown out the truth. And as much as white America may not be able to hear it (and as much as politics may require Obama to condemn it) let us be clear, Jeremiah Wright fundamentally told the truth.

Oh I know that for some such a comment will seem shocking. After all, didn't he say that America "got what it deserved" on 9/11? And didn't he say that black people should be singing "God Damn America" because of its treatment of the African American community throughout the years?

Well actually, no he didn't.

Wright said not that the attacks of September 11th were justified, but that they were, in effect, predictable. Deploying the imagery of chickens coming home to roost is not to give thanks for the return of the poultry or to endorse such feathered homecoming as a positive good; rather, it is merely to note two things: first, that what goes around, indeed, comes around--a notion with longstanding theological grounding--and secondly, that the U.S. has indeed engaged in more than enough violence against innocent people to make it just a tad bit hypocritical for us to then evince shock and outrage about an attack on ourselves, as if the latter were unprecedented.

He noted that we killed far more people, far more innocent civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki than were killed on 9/11 and "never batted an eye." That this statement is true is inarguable, at least amongst sane people. He is correct on the math, he is correct on the innocence of the dead (neither city was a military target), and he is most definitely correct on the lack of remorse or even self-doubt about the act: sixty-plus years later most Americans still believe those attacks were justified, that they were needed to end the war and "save American lives."

But not only does such a calculus suggest that American lives are inherently worth more than the lives of Japanese civilians (or, one supposes, Vietnamese, Iraqi or Afghan civilians too), but it also ignores the long-declassified documents, and President Truman's own war diaries, all of which indicate clearly that Japan had already signaled its desire to end the war, and that we knew they were going to surrender, even without the dropping of atomic weapons. The conclusion to which these truths then attest is simple, both in its basic veracity and it monstrousness: namely, that in those places we committed premeditated and deliberate mass murder, with no justification whatsoever; and yet for saying that I will receive more hate mail, more hostility, more dismissive and contemptuous responses than will those who suggest that no body count is too high when we're the ones doing the killing. Jeremiah Wright becomes a pariah, because, you see, we much prefer the logic of George Bush the First, who once said that as President he would "never apologize for the United States of America. I don't care what the facts are."

And Wright didn't say blacks should be singing "God Damn America." He was suggesting that blacks owe little moral allegiance to a nation that has treated so many of them for so long as animals, as persons undeserving of dignity and respect, and which even now locks up hundreds of thousands of non-violent offenders (especially for drug possession), even while whites who do the same crimes (and according to the data, when it comes to drugs, more often in fact), are walking around free. His reference to God in that sermon was more about what God will do to such a nation, than it was about what should or shouldn't happen. It was a comment derived from, and fully in keeping with, the black prophetic tradition, and although one can surely disagree with the theology (I do, actually, and don't believe that any God either blesses or condemns nation states for their actions), the statement itself was no call for blacks to turn on America. If anything, it was a demand that America earn the respect of black people, something the evidence and history suggests it has yet to do.

Whites refuse to remember (or perhaps have never learned) that which black folks cannot afford to forget. I've seen white people stunned to the point of paralysis when they learn the truth about lynchings in this country--when they discover that such events were not just a couple of good old boys with a truck and a rope hauling some black guy out to the tree, hanging him, and letting him swing there. They were never told the truth: that lynchings were often community events, advertised in papers as "Negro Barbecues," involving hundreds or even thousands of whites, who would join in the fun, eat chicken salad and drink sweet tea, all while the black victims of their depravity were being hung, then shot, then burned, and then having their body parts cut off, to be handed out to onlookers. They are stunned to learn that postcards of the events were traded as souvenirs, and that very few whites, including members of their own families did or said anything to stop it.

Rather than knowing about and confronting the ugliness of our past, whites take steps to excise the less flattering aspects of our history so that we need not be bothered with them. So, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for example, site of an orgy of violence against the black community in 1921, city officials literally went into the town library and removed all reference to the mass killings in the Greenwood district from the papers with a razor blade--an excising of truth and an assault on memory that would remain unchanged for over seventy years.

of a preachers position. Not all preachers exercise this role. But, the ones that do exhort and condemn the nations they're in when that nation fails to live up to what he and his following considers their god's law. In the Old Testament, the prophets were usually at odds with the nations leaders, and the people's spirit of nationalism that may take them off God's law and plans for his people. Of course, this resulted in most of them losing their lives at the hands of the political leaders. There are many Christians in this country who preach in this manner. Many of them in predominantly white churches, but they don't make the news because they didn't have a Presidential nominee in their congregation.

Tell us of a white preacher that says ''God damn America ''and says the US   bombing of Hiroshima was terrorism :)

Close enough to think they could be saying the same thing, but implicitly vs. explicitly. Look up and see what Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell said about 9/11. They probably said that we got what we deserved before Willy did. And, then there's the nutcase who is demonstrating at the burials of our war veterans. See what he has to say about our country. Sorry, I don't know what they've said about Hiroshima, but there's plenty of people around the world Christian and non-Christian who believe it was.

You are comparing our President attending a flamboyant Christian service with a GOP Senate Candidate who dabbled in the occult!  Evan the Non-Christian Right Wing Hypocrites may have a hard time buying that!

Black Liberation Theology is merely "flamboyant"?

Tell us all. What is your understanding of what she meant by "dabbled"? How old was she when she "dabbled"?

She is a candidate for a senate seat from the tiny state of Delaware?  Even if she is lucky enough to win -- since she is way behind in the polls -- she will still ONLY be the junior senator from the tiny state of Delaware.

The only thing I can think of is that you like her look and want her to be on TV for six years so you can fantasize about getting down her pants!!!  LOL

give the Republicans a majority and control of the senate. I'd think that would make her of interest to both Democrats and Republicans.

vote to ratify treaties, vote on judicial nominations and other confirmations, vote on issues like whether or not to extend unemployment benefits, etc...

She would be a very reliable NO vote against the Obama administration on just about every issue. nomination, etc. that comes up...

It is very very important that Chris Coons wins the DE. senate race...

other Republican.

Fine.  I agree with that logic and that point.

But Pri's obsession is more about her personally than her potential role as a Senator.

And, in my mind, it would be critical that Chris Coons loses the the Delaware Senate race.  More No votes against the Obama administration are needed to stop this wasteful spending and spiraling debt.

A very good case for voting for even a witch over a "loyal" democrat. lol

As everyone who has ever followed politics is no doubt aware, the pendulum swings both ways. What I wish is that the damn thing didn't swing so fucking far in both directions.

Socialists and America haters, not to mention class warfare on the one side, a bunch of religious nut jobs, better suited for the 19 century, on the other. Yeah we got choices all right. Bad ones.

Being from a small state does not matter.  She would be one of the lowest in seniority, but even a junior Senator has a lot of influence.  But she needs to win and she is behind in the polls, and she is being attacked by her own party.
Anyone want to take bets on a long shot?

but her influence will be very limited within the chambers if she is able to overcome the huge odds and win the election.

But the real obsession from many Dems is not the fear of her having a powerful Senate seat.  It is the fear that someone as inexperience politically as she is could actually beat one of their own veterans in an election.

It's the same fear the established Republicans had before she beat the nine-term Congressman in the recent primary.

It just shows how pissed off Americans are with Congress and the Senate right now.  When they are willing to throw out a veteran for a relative newcomer with a dubious past.

That is the real story right now.  That is why the Tea Party movement has gained some footing.  It is not the rants of a Glenn Beck or a Sarah Palin.  It is the fed-up attitude of tax-paying Americans as they watch their elected representatives foolishly spend their money and arrogantly take care of themselves in Washington.

GaGambler1734 reads

His claims of evenhandedness go out the window whenever the Tea Party is mentioned. I don't know what it is about the Tea Party that threatens him so, but he has made more posts on the subject than everyone else here combined.

The same sentiments that were behind his candidacy for President are pretty much the sentiments of the Tea Party, today! It will be interesting to see where they are in 2012.

The only thing that "threatens" me is "higher provider rates"--------:)

As for evenhandedness, as something of "social libertarian" liberal ( which I think you claim yourself to be from time to time ) I think you
fail to properly condemn the " Social conservative wingnuts" ( who I know you despise )
who make up a large faction of the Tea party movement.

And you think such "spacecases" as Sharron Angle & Christine O' Donnell are worth defending ?
They threaten the validity of Tea Party movement
which contains a faction of thoughful fiscal conservatives who I agree with from time to time.

Because we all want to bang her, imagine her and palin together

she has Sarah Palin by her hips,
Crazy laughter from the Democrats,
Bill Mayer loves her, that's a fact,
She's a restless spirit in a business suit,

though you have a leftist lean,
you know wanna do, Ms. Christine,
oooo, witchy woman,

Thanks, your YouTube version was only missing the bouncing ball. Actually this was the first time I actually listened to the words. Is it a safe to assume the chick in the song was into heroin? Now I'm trying to figure out why this was Elaine Benes' (Seinfeld) favorite song.

Good luck next week against Boise State. Just waiting for the spread. That should be a great game.

Good to see the Bruins opening a can of whup ass on an opponent. Now what is up with the Cal-Bears losing to the Nevada-Reno.

by the way, I still think Christine O'Donnell is sexy. She looks like a porn star from the eighties, but I cannot remember the name.

Priapus531151 reads

who did porn in the 90's. Take a gander at the link below---VERY hot babe.

There was also a 80's-90's porn star named Aja, who also bears a resemblance to O' Donnell.

I did well on that game, did Nv parlayed with the over on both the game and the first half. It started a pretty good weekend in football for me. Nevada can light up the scorboard, just like BSU has done for several years now, who also won and covered easily (including a surprisingly low over under of 51 1/2) this weekend.

BTW the BSU line is out BSU -16 1/2. Interesting line considering OSU held TCU to "only" thirty points a couple of weeks ago. This may be one of the few "non circled games" BSU plays this year, as I expect the over/under to be well in excess of fifty points.

Except for those orthodox Jews who take Leviticus literally and won't suffer a witch to live; who really cares if a lady follows the legitimate spiritual path of Wicca?

I think they may have a problem with a candidate who dabbles in witchcraft.  Because they consider witchcraft as Devil Worship.

Wicca has as much validity as any other organized religion.  Also, if you consider the fact that I can't remember reading about one large-scale, major atrocity committed in the name of Wicca, then I think it had a leg up on almost every other religion out there.

As far as the "genetically altered mice with human brains," I don't know anything about that, but I will say that it can be challenging enough to find HUMANS with human brains.  If they are now finding them in mice, I guess I have been looking in the wrong places - LOL!

Don't know much about Ms. O'Donnell, but when she gets elected in the Tea Party Landslide (tm), she is sure gonna liven up the Halls of Congress.
