Acid attack hoax: Bethany Storro could face felony charges for faking attack

WASHINGTON - On August 30, Bethany Storro of Vancouver,Wash., told media that a woman she’d never seen approached her just outside a Starbuck’s and threw a cup of acid in her face, leaving her hospitalized and disfigured – now she says she faked the attack and threw the acid on herself.

Why? That’s something police are working to uncover.

Dr. David Swanson, a psychologist, told CBS News, "Really, what you're seeing for somebody like this is just a big hole in this life, and a strong desperate need for attention and willingness to go to an extent to get it."

Police say they have no explanation for Storro's hoax, but say she is sorry.

Strorro was scheduled to be on the Oprah Winfrey Show this week to share her story, but quickly backed out when rumors she’d faked the attack spread like wildfire on the Internet.

No one wanted to believe she could fake such a vicious attack - especially Derri Velarde who, four days after Storro was attacked, suffered from a similar vicious acid attack that some believe may have been a copy-cat crime.

Velarde suffered burns to her face, neck, and back.

Things just didn’t add up

Police said things were just not adding up, which is why they served a search warrant on Storro’s home, searching the home and re-interviewed her Thursday.

During the search and interview Storro admitted to police that she did this to herself.

Chief Clifford Cook, of the Vancouver Police Department, told reporters, "Miss Storro admitted that her injuries were self-inflicted. The attack itself did not occur as she had previously reported."

Police say Storro now faces possible criminal charges, including the possibility of felony charges and fraud.

Commander Marla Schuman of the Vancouver Police Department – the detective who interviewed Storro on Thursday - said on “The Early Show” Friday that she knows why Storro doused herself with acid but said they aren’t discussing that now because of possible charges.

Schuman said, "There are probably pending charges, based on the actions of Bethany that prevent us from doing that. So, is there a motive? I'm sure there is. And one can only wonder what her state of mind is."

Schuman also said, "She is extremely upset. She's very remorseful. In many ways this just got bigger than what she expected."

According to Schuman, there were issues with Storro’s story from the beginning. She said there were red flags and a lot of holes. The more they developed the case, it became evident this was a self-inflicted act. That’s what lead police to searching her home and re-interviewing Storro.

Police retrieved several pieces of evidence but would not say what they were. They did say they did not find acid in her home.

Range of charges

Storro faces a range of charges, Schuman said. “The basic charge would be false reporting. It could go, depending on whether she accessed any of the funds from the fund-raisers, any of the financial aspects of this, could go all the way up to felony charges and fraud."

CBS News co-anchor Erica Hill said the police department is trying to get some of the money back that was donated to Storro.

Schuman said Storro's family doesn't appear to have known anything about the self-inflicted wounds.

"At this point, they're very concerned for Bethany and they appear very devastated," Schuman said

Parents of woman who threw acid on herself still puzzled

(CNN) -- The parents of a Washington state woman who admitted making up a story about an assailant throwing caustic liquid in her face told reporters Friday that they don't know why their daughter inflicted her own wounds.

"She's obviously dealing with some deep internal, emotional and psychological problems that we had no knowledge of, and we hope that she'll get the help that she needs," said Nancy Neuwelt, mother of 28-year-old Bethany Storro. "She's got a long road ahead of her, but she's on the road, and we're going to walk it with her."

Joe and Nancy Neuwelt said there were no signs of trouble leading up to the August 30 incident, after which Storro originally told police she had been attacked by an African-American woman with an athletic build and slicked-back hair pulled into a pony tail.

On Thursday, Storro admitted her injuries were self-inflicted, Vancouver police said. The Neuwelts said they had no reason to doubt their daughter's story -- as "any good parents would" -- until Storro confessed on Thursday.

Prosecuters will decide whether or not to charge Storro, police said.

White Mom Who Falsely Accused Black Men Of Kidnapping Her Is Found
From msnbc.com

Prosecutors believe that the Pennsylvania woman who was found with her daughter at Disney World after claiming they were abducted by two black men may have been taking actions due to domestic tensions with her second husband.

“They’re still looking into the motive behind this. We believe it may have to do with some domestic problems she may have been having with her husband,” Bucks County (Pa.) district attorney Michelle Henry told TODAY’s Natalie Morales Thursday. Henry said the couple may also have been facing financial problems.

Henry said that Bonnie Sweeten, 38, of Feasterville, will be charged with false reports and identity theft, both misdemeanors, and would be extradited from Florida to face the charges. Her 9-year-old daughter, Julia Rakoczy, was being interviewed by investigators and was to return home with her father and Sweeten’s ex-husband, Anthony Rakoczy.

How the alleged attacked played politically in the charged political races in that state? Within a week, the democratic candidate, who had been behind by 2 points, surged to a 9 point lead in the same poll. Just wondering how the attack, the the discovery that it was a fraud played in that dynamic.

Theft charges for woman burned in acid hoax
Sept. 20, 2010, 6:15 p.m. PDT
The Columbian
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A woman who splashed a caustic substance on her face and claimed a stranger had attacked her is facing three theft charges.

The felony second-degree charges filed Monday by Clark County Deputy Prosecutor Tony Golik relate to a public fund that was set up to benefit Bethany Storro after she was chemically burned Aug. 30.

She admitted to police last Thursday that her injuries were self-inflicted. Her parents have said all money raised for her will be returned.

Storro said she was trying to kill herself when she put what is believed to be caustic drain cleaner on her face, according to an affidavit filed Monday in Clark County Superior Court.

"Then, when I realized it wasn't killing me, I thought maybe this was the answer to all my problems. To have a completely different face," she said in court papers quoted by The Columbian
Storro had recently moved to her parents' home in Vancouver after being divorced in Idaho.

The Columbian reports no one answered the door Monday at the home Storro shares with her parents, Joe and Nancy Neuwelt. They issued a public apology last Friday, saying they never doubted their daughter's story until she changed it under police questioning. Her mother said Storro is "obviously dealing with some deep internal emotional and psychological problems."

Storro originally told police a woman accosted her near a small Vancouver park and asked, "Hey, pretty girl, want something to drink?" before scorching her face with a cup of something acidic.
Authorities now believe the substance was a drain cleaner, the newspaper reported on its website. Storro apparently used paper towels to apply it in a restroom in a public park near Clark College, several hours before the 911 call was made.

Last Thursday, detectives executed a search warrant at her home and found undisclosed items which led them to believe that the attack was self-inflicted. She then gave a statement to detectives in which she said she had burned herself.

Vancouver police Cmdr. Marla Schuman described Storro last week as "extremely upset," adding, "She is very remorseful. In many ways this is something
that just got bigger than what she expected."
