ot up.  I will defend you in that we are 120/80 for 55 years and then suddenly in four years you go 134, 144 and 154.  I understand if other writers don't.  My doc described my case (a relatively active and athletic guy) in these terms..."you have always had a healthy heart.  When you were 20, 30 and 40, the blood vessels were like the rubber hoses on the 1960 Lincoln.  The rubber was soft and subtle.  The blood vessels gave with every pump of the heart.  So for 40 plus years, your heart and kidneys learned to 'push this hard' to get blood rushing to all the places you needed it.  Now, suddenly those hoses are getting brittle and old.  But the heart and kidneys still are doing their trained job.  So the ACE inhibitor tells the kidney less pressure please, stop squeezing so hard."  And that's what our medicine does.  If you have the diuretic (old school), the pressure is reduced by peeing.  Some of us need both versions.  So, if you are on the famous one, Lisiniprol, then relax.  Like the doc said to me...no, it won't wilt...in fact you might feel a little bit stronger...in that regard.  That certainly has been true for me.  Now, I never needed the blue pill so I don't know the interactions, but the "L" pill has been most pleasing.  I have a history of complete disarray in between the sheets from being a speed shooter in college to being a marathoner and sometimes the wrong ladies just couldn't get me interested.  I'm a little bit more under control now, holding back when I need to and relaxing when I Want to enjoy.  As someone else said, sex is good for you.  The doc probably told you diet and exercise.  Well there's an exercise that burns 400 calories an hour or about the same as a brisk walk.

Just a little over sixty and my blood pressure has shot up. Overall is very good shape but just put on blood pressure medication.  Any sexual or any  general life information others may have learned that I should know?
Thanks -

Blood pressure doesn't just shoot up.
You're either under stress, over weight, not eating well or something.
I'd strongly suggest you address that first because V can dramatically alter your BP while you are on one of the hypertensive medicines.
And the physical exertion of sex is something you need to think about.
Your Dr is the best place for advice.

Bocabuster makes very good points.

Although, I would add that it is possible for a sudden increase in BP due to other issues, the aging process not withstanding. I am sure his doc has gone over all possible causes to eliminate any root problems that need more urgent addressing.

Viagra and Cialis both work to dilate blood vessels to increase blood flow to the penis. This means that it also dilates blood vessels everywhere else and in combination with your BP meds, can cause an unexpected and serious drop in BP causing you to pass out (or worse because the Viagra/Cialis stays in circulation in your blood stream for more than an hour).

Sex will lower blood pressure so have it and keep up with it, just avoid trying to imitate porn movies. Not only is it bad for your heart, it is usually pretty damn boring to the point of being irritating to your female partner. LOL

The only thing I would say about BP meds and being over 60 as important (in my mind) are these things:

1) Stay well hydrated all the time and don't wait until you are thirsty. Your thirst signals will not work as well as you age and most BP meds act like water pills and can cause a really mild dehydration.

2) Not only will dehydration make medical issues worse, it will also turn your ejaculate into the equivalent of thin horse glue. Ugh!

3) Stay compliant with your meds and listen to your doc. Always tell your doc about anything new that happens in your body, even if you don't see how it is connected.

Be well

It stiffens a bit and this often leads to what is called isolated systolic hypertension. To explain, young people wha are hypertensive usually have his diastolic (that is the lower number) high blood presser e where as at our age the higher number is usually the one that is elevated.
This is very common.  I care for older people and very very many them are on high blood pressure meds.
One reason there are so many older people (I'm talking late 80s  into 90s) walking around or bicycling or kayaking or working or having sex is because we can easily control high blood pressure and the incidence of stroke and heart failure is going down even tho the number of older people is rising.
It is possible to lower high BP today with few side effects,
Some BP meds can make you sleepy or interfere with erections but there are many --meds like ARBs (angiotensin receptor blockers)-- that generally have few side effects for most people.
One thing is certain, keeping you blood pressure under control is vital for your health.
There are arguments about how low this should be.  It is said the systolic pressure should be below 140.  I usually aim for 130 or less in my patients.
